Some suggestions and tips to help your planning,
preparing and packing for your dream trip.
When the Limpopo river is low enough a local entrepreneur constructs a make shift causeway. Very reasonable charges.
Your tool box needs all kinds of
‘bits and bobs’ for that emergency!
It’s always a good idea to stop before dark to set up camp. Especially in unknown territory. We prefer to stop an hour or so before sunset, so we can check the surrounds. If you are uncertain of the area, find a local family where they are willing to share their space with you, you always feel safer. Below, we camped with a road construction company!
Just a few quick notes ...... For your list of things to do.
Make out a will, if you haven’t done one yet. Tell your family where it is filed. It’s easier than you think.
If possible buy or hire a satellite phone.
Ensure family and friends have a rough idea of your planned route. Sit with them and show them on a map where you are hoping to travel.
Arrange for roaming on you home mobile service. Some providers have a system of stopping calls and replacing them with a message, or just allowing text messages through to you. Sim cards are now so reasonable, you could purchase a local one as soon as you cross the border.
From time to time text a responsible person, who can record where you are.
If possible take a first aid course before you leave. You never know whose life you might save! The course is so easy!
Pack and prepare a good first aid kit. Will help on this later. In the bush, there are usually no chemists and very often no doctors or hospitals.
It’s not necessary to take along all those beautiful rings and jewelry etc. Purchase a cheap waterproof watch just for the trip.
Small little gifts for folks who will no doubt help you along the way.
Remember most cultures understand a handshake and a smile. Being friendly can really get you out of tricky situations!
